SYNOPSIS In the Book of the Dead, a game inspired both by the original Egyptian book of the same name, and also a story I was writing, you play as Ariah, a young, recently deceased egyptian girl. You start off in a waiting-room of sorts, waiting to be released into the Underworld proper. From then on, it's a fight for your life as you traverse the vast land of the underworld. The entire goal of the game is to reach the Seventh and final Hall that the dead must travel to in order to be judged by Osiris. Each of the six preceeding halls is guarded by a menagerie of different Gods (42 in all) whom you must defeat by various means. (i.e. You won't always just be battling them). In order to defeat these Gods, you must gain new skills by exploring the land.

| WORLD DEVELOPMENT THE UNDERWORLD. Currency: The Drachma
The world is based loosely upon descriptions of the land of the dead found in several real-life books of the dead. There are only a few cities in the game (As most of the people have either gone on to their fate, or been turned into Shades). Most of the Land of the Dead has been overrun by Shades, the evil spiritual manifestations of the dead. Shades have not been Judged by Osiris, nor can they ever be. They are the unlucky souls who have been killed in the underworld, and suffer for eternity. The Shades have a tendancy to attack the Unjudged Dead. (That means you) An interesting fact is that the entirety of the game's exterior is on one map. Let's see how THAT goes over . . .
| | Characters | Description | Ariah
| This is Ariah, the main character. She was the daughter of a fairly wealthy merchant in Egypt, who dealt in weapons and urns. Over the course of the story, she will learn quite a bit about herself, via her 'Ka', or spirit. (In the actual book of the dead, one's spirit was shown as a seperate entity from one's body in the underworld.) | XXX
| This is XXX. No, not porn, I just haven't decided what to name him yet. XXX is the first teammate you acquire. You first encounter XXX in the waiting room of the dead. He's the purple-haired boy (Yeah, I know, sorry for using Elmer, but his sprite looks awesome) in the corner of theroom, pacing. A quick conversation reveals that he's anxious because he's lost his Book. It was the ancient egyptian belief that the spells and instructions written in the Book were the only way of getting to Osiris in one piece. | Thyamis
| Thyamis, the Thief. Contrary to what his outfit suggests, Thyamis is quite open to talking about personal subjects, including the manner of his death. In the game, you save Thyamis from becoming a lowly Shade. | Amenerdis
| This is Amenerdis, a wise woman who lends you her help occasionally during the bulk of the game. She seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of everything, and one must wonder how long she's been dead. She owns a shop in the Town of Halls [Placeholder title] but is rarely ever there. Her apprentice normally runs things. |
